This is the professional that works to make sure that the electronic and electrical equipment continues to be in good working order. They can do this by replacing parts that are faulty, using the necessary preventative measures, and repairing any systems that are damaged. What type of work is exactly done will depend on the area in which the maintenance electrician decides to focus, which can be either industrial or residential. Maintenance electricians are either self employed, employed by an electrical contracting firm, or other industries.

Industrial environment maintenance electricians

• Oversee systems of great complexity

• Maintaining the air conditioning and lighting systems of a complex or office building

• Repairing transformers and generators in factories

• Overseeing the electrical network that supplies power to the industrial robots

Residential environment maintenance electricians

• Asked by a client to do some minor installation and construction work

• Install new lighting or fix a problem with old lighting

• Replace or repair a faulty or old fuse box

• Rewire an entire home

Being a maintenance electrician you must be able to:

• Diagnose any electrical problem

• Give an accurate assessment any damage an electrical problem has caused along with the amount of effort and time to take care of the problem

• Use their in-depth knowledge of the particular system that has the problem so they can solve in a manner that is both time- and cost-efficient to minimize any inconvenience to the client.

If the maintenance electrician works in a place where a number of people work or spend their day and it is a complex system how much responsibility they have increases. When they work in this type of environment they are responsible for notifying the management if an electrical problem makes the place to hazardous to work in.

To become a maintenance electrician they must do it through an apprenticeship program that is a four-year program and you are paid for being in it. This program puts the emphasis on classroom and on-the-job experience. They start their on-site training/job experience working under an experienced electrician. They start out practicing basic techniques by attaching conduits and setting anchors, eventually moving up to intermediate jobs like testing and complete installation of outlets, switches and conduits and learning how to diagram different electrical systems. During the time spent in the classroom they will learn to read blueprints, mathematics, electrical safety, and electrical theory. In order to work as any electrician they will have to be licensed. By the time the four years is completed they will master all electrical knowledge that is non-specific.
